The artist Marisa Godínez (Lima, 1950) studied at the PUCP’s School of Art, and was a pioneer in feminist drawing in Peru. In 1978 she was invited to contribute to the satirical magazine Monos y Monadas with drawings whose subject matter was poetic and notably anti-patriarchal. This multi-talented artist, who uses a range of different media, returned to drawing in 2017 and in 2022 held the La Niña No Mirada exhibition at the Luis Miró Quesada Garland Gallery in Miraflores. Sheila Alvarado (Lima, 1979) is an artist, writer and LGTBI activist. She graduated from the National School of Fine Art, with a silver medal in printmaking. In 2019 she won the Peruvian Ministry of Culture’s Child and Young Adult Literature Prize. In 2020, she was one of the winners of the same ministry’s National Competition for Creative Child and Young Adult Literature Projects and a year later represented Peru as an illustrator and writer at the Guadalajara Book Fair. Both artists will talk to Álex Huerta-Mercado about activism through art.

María Larrea (Spain/France), director, screenwriter and fiction writer, born in Bilbao (Spain) and raised in Paris, where she studied film at La Fémis, is the author of Los de Bilbao nacen donde quieren. Judith Vélez (Peru), a director, university lecturer and active participant in the Association of Women Film Directors, has made outstanding movies, including her prizewinning first film, La prueba (2006), and Volver a ver (2018), which represented Peru at the Goya Awards. Enrica Pérez (Peru) also trained as a filmmaker at La Fémis and studied Film Direction at the University of Columbia, New York; in 2009 she founded Sexto Sentido Producciones, and through this company she developed, produced and distributed her first work, Climas. As part of the Literary Pairs series run by Hay Festival and the British Council, and an event that will be repeated at the Hay-on-Wye Festival in 2025, the BBC Mundo journalist Matías Zibell will talk to Agustina Bazterrica and Hari Kunzru. Agustina Bazterrica (Argentina) is a writer and cultural manager; as well as short story collections, she has published Tender Is the Flesh, translated into 25 languages, and the novel that she presents here: The Unworthy, a disturbing dystopian book that deals with the matter of friendship. The writer Hari Kunzru (United Kingdom), who has contributed to media outlets such as The New York Times, The Guardian and Wired, has been a fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation, the New York Public Library and the American Academy in Berlin. His novels have won a range of prestigious prizes and have been translated into over 20 languages. He presents Red Pill, a novel about the far right, online culture, creativity, sanity and history.

Patricia Salas (Peru) is a sociologist and expert in matters related to social development; she has a doctorate in Social Sciences from the Universidad Católica de Santa María and has been both Chair of the National Council of Education and Peruvian Minister of Education. Maritza Ramírez (Peru) is a dedicated Kukama activist who works to revitalise the language, as well as on the promotion of bilingual and intercultural education in Peru through documenting the Kukama language, developing educational materials and creating teaching spaces. Her work has been recognised nationally and internationally for its significant impact on the promotion of inclusive education that respects cultural diversity.

Ever since the Inca Garcilaso said, over four centuries ago, that he was a mestizo and proud to be so, much has been written, said and discussed regarding the exciting and often dramatic processes of mixing cultures, something that characterises a large section of Latin American society. Two poets, one Spanish and the other Peruvian, discuss this matter, together with the moderator, the Peruvian writer and journalist Verónica Ramírez. Luis García Montero is a poet, professor at the University of Granada and current Director of the Instituto Cervantes. His most recent poetry book is Un año y tres meses. Alonso Ruiz Rosas has published a poetry book, Contra el Leteo (2023), and is the former Director of the Inca Garcilaso Cultural Centre. The novel by Verónica Ramírez, Casi todo desaparece, has just been republished in Spain.

The Settlers, a Chilean film directed by Felipe Gálvez, opened at the 76th International Film Festival in Cannes and was the Chilean candidate for the Oscar nomination for Best International Film in 2024. Set in 1901, in Tierra del Fuego, it tells the story of three riders –a British lieutenant, an American mercenary and a mixed-race guide– who travel the territory with the mission of preparing a route for the trade in sheep. What follows is the raw, disturbing realty of colonisation: the absolute destruction of the native peoples.

The film can be seen as part of the festival programme. At this event, the film’s director and screenwriter, Gálvez, will talk with the BBC journalist Alejandro Millán about how he has captured, with a striking visual style, such a profound narrative and complex characters, questioning the official versions of history; it invites us to reflect on the question of injustice and oppression in order to understand the past and its importance in Chilean society.

The podcast and book It’s a continent are two of the best contemporary introductions to the history and current affairs of African countries intended for a broad public. Created and produced by two British communicators with African origins, Astrid Madimba and Chinny Ukata, it explores in an entertaining and accessible way the history of each African country, dismantling myths and celebrating the cultural and historical riches of a set of countries and peoples that constitute a very large percentage of the world population. Together with the BBC journalist Matías Zibell, Madimba and Ukata will tell us how the idea for the podcast arose, and why it is important to communicate the reality of each African country to a world that still has much to learn and a long way to go in terms of decolonising.

Wiener is the author of books such as Sexographies, Nine Moons, Llamada perdida, Dicen de mí and Undiscovered. Her new book, Atusparia, presents us with the story of a left-wing politician, a victim of lawfare, imprisoned in a high-security jail in the Amazon rainforest. There, capitalism launches an attack on her ideals, submerging her in a whirlwind of drugs and sex that leads her to undertake an introspective journey to Lake Titicaca, in imitation of her childhood hero. This posindigenista novel exposes hierarchies and power struggles as the forces that undermine the emancipatory movements. With the participation of the musician Renata Flores, famous for fusing Andean music with trap, hip-hop and pop styles, and for writing lyrics in Quechua.

For many, being from Arequipa is a true "nationality”. Is being arequipeño an attitude? Can Arequipans be born wherever they want? What are the characteristics of city locals? Is there a divorce between reality and assuming Arequipa identity, and is it a myth? To explore these questions, we invite Julio Villanueva Chang, author of No se nace en vano al pie de un volcán, a series of biographical sketches of five people born in the city of Arequipa, who, from a distance, can help us find some answers, or at least paths that might lead to them. Also featuring Víctor Condori, a historian born in Ilo and now living in Arequipa, co-author of Historia mínima de Arequipa; Fiorella Quintanilla, director of the UCSP Arts Centre; and Patricia Roberts, a prominent Arequipan poet. In conversation with the journalist Omar Zevallos, who will try to decipher “arequipeñismo” from different angles, aiming to find ways that allow us to glimpse better ways of living together in the city.

In his new book, Abecedario Climático Peruano, he presents over a hundred illustrated words, with stories and photos collected in the coastal, mountain and rainforest regions of Peru over the course of fifteen years. The work highlights the local eco-heroes who lead climate action, while also preserving ancestral knowledge, and it combines personal testimonies with an analysis of the effects of climate change on different communities. He will talk to the architect, poet and curator Angelina Ferrero.

Cuadernos hispanoamericanos aims to promote knowledge and exchange between writers of different generations and nationalities, united by a single language and literary tradition, enriched by authors of diverse origins. At this event, Carlos Bardem, a well-known Spanish actor and writer, presents his latest book, Badaq, transporting us to 1583 where, through the eyes of a rhinoceros carried to Madrid as a gift for King Phillip II, the novel criticises the exploitation and corruption of the Spanish Empire. Also with Hugo Coya (Peru), the renowned journalist, television producer, university lecturer and public speaker, who presents El espía continental, a kind of spin-off of El último en la torre (2022) which explores the political turmoil of 1930 in Mexico and the life of Jacobo Hurwitz, an enigmatic spy who had Peruvian and Jewish roots. Both authors, known for their literary skills and for their contributions to historical understanding and reflection through fiction, will talk to Teresa Ruiz Rosas about the colonial past.

After time spent as a journalist and film critic, he has since worked making films, being the first Latin American to make three big budget films in the US movie industry. His production company, Iguana Films, creates series and films in Peru and other countries in the region. He has directed films such as Hour of the Assassin, Sniper, The Specialist, Anaconda, The Feast of the Goa and Tatuajes en la memoria. He has also made television series, such as Gamboa and the soap opera Carmín. In addition, he has also worked in the theatre, and on the creation of the “museums of the image” concept. The girls and boys of the Hogar de Cristo home bring their special energy to the opening of the Hay Festivalito, sharing what they have learned at their dance, music, reading and games workshops. This will be an artistic presentation that invites the audience to participate in a musical performance, created by the performers themselves. With a little imagination, household objects become musical instruments. At the Hogar de Cristo home, the main theme for 2024 is respecting and protecting Mother Earth and all the workshops aim to deal with this very urgent matter. Hogar de Cristo has become involved in the Arequipa initiative “One tree, one life” in order that children understand, in greater depth over time, the significance of and need to protect, water and plant, in every sense of the terms. Music, song and dance are the food of the soul and we invite audiences to enjoy the classic Andean folk of the Hogar de Cristo, El árbol de la queñua es vida.

Philippe Sands (United Kingdom) is a well-known human rights lawyer and author of acclaimed works such as East West Street and The Ratline, and at this event he will talk to Felipe Gálvez about his most recent book, The Last Colony. Sands tells the painful story of the forced displacement of Liseby Elysé and other inhabitants of the Chagos archipelago in 1973, due to the strategic interests of the Cold War. Displaced to Mauritius in order to make room for a US military base, this book condemns British colonial injustice and its effects. With a story that includes history, essay and personal drama, Sands reveals the human tragedies behind the great historical events, underlining the need for justice and reparation, exploring the recent history of Chile and taking as a point of departure the lives and works of iconic figures such as Bruce Chatwin, Roberto Bolaño and the dictator Augusto Pinochet.

This extreme sportsman has set un unthinkable record: running 86 ultramarathons in 86 days. 60 km per day. Over 5,170 km in total. Between November 2022 and February 2023, the athlete ran through all the geographical zones and climates of Peru. He undertook his challenge accompanied by a camera, and now stars in the documentary that tells his story: Camino de los sueños. Savas Coban, a German of Turkish origin, talks about his run through Peru with the BBC journalist Alejandro Millán.

The author goes beyond certain common factors (nativism, populism and authoritarianism) to an important phenomenon proposed by the radical right: the suppression or invisiblisation of the differences among left-wing ideologies, and the creation of a discourse that proposes the left as an existential threat to democracy. The citadel of Machu Picchu is a gem of Inca architecture and a symbol of Peru, a source of pride and identity. The aim of this activity is to immortalise this marvel with a diorama, a simple but effective technique that evokes its three-dimensional nature. In order to do this, participants will receive a pre-cut mountain landscape, along with colours and pens. The 3D view can be made by adding an outline of Machu Picchu to the pre-prepared landscape, according to the images used as reference. This exercise works on fine motor skills, creativity and artistic expression, and will help participants understand how a flat surface can become a three-dimensional structure. With Karina Villalba.

The Peruvian Children’s Symphony Choir is made up of forty talented children, and is a part of the initiative founded by the tenor Juan Diego Flórez, who aims to promote musical talent and the integrated development of young Peruvians.

Two authors will talk about literature and dystopias with Patricia del Río. Edmundo Paz Soldán (Bolivia), an award-winning writer and academic, presents Área protegida, a dark novel about seeking for unexpected solutions, political polarisation, and the disasters that are awaiting Earth. The author and musician Giacomo Roncagliolo (Peru) published stories and poems in the fanzine Morfina between 2011 and 2013. In 2017 he was shortlisted for the Clarín Novel Prize for Ámok. His recent novel, El fantástico sueño de aniquilar esto, is a disturbing thriller that explores the addictive power of virtual sexuality and its sinister influence on contemporary desire.

Roberto Chang (Peru/United States) is a Distinguished Professor at the University of Rutgers (New Jersey) and a researcher at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He has also been an official researcher at the Federal Reserve in Atlanta and professor at the universities of New York, Princeton, Columbia and the London School of Economics. His contributions to the study of international economy, monetary and exchange policy, and financial crises have been very well received and are considered in the academic debate about the practice of political economy. He is the editor of Economía peruana: ¿Milagro o ficción? Zaraí Toledo (Peru) has a doctorate in Politics from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. He researches the development of the Andrean state, the management of natural resources, and informality. He is currently a post-doctoral researcher at the Center for Inter-American Policy and Research (CIPR) at Tulane University, New Orleans. These two will talk about the challenges of the Peruvian economy, together with the economist Carlos Paredes Lanatta.

Karina Pacheco (Peru) presents her new book, Niños del pájaro azul, in conversation with Verónica Ramírez. Pacheco is a writer, anthropologist and publisher, and has written acclaimed books such as La voluntad del molle. As well as an author of short stories, she runs Ceques Editores, an independent publishing company that specializes in literature, history and anthropology and, in the year 2022 she won the National Literature Prize. The stories from this book take place in villages in the Amazon region, the mountains, or beautiful islands, all beset by corruption, the devastation of nature, or unresolved conflicts from the past, and all of them are filled with the questions of many children, or by the memory of their songs.

Leontxo García (Spain) is a journalist specializing in chess since 1983, and has been writing for El País since 1985, trainer in educational chess and speaker on the educational, social and therapeutic applications of chess (with regard to brain aging and Alzheimer’s), as well as about the history of the game and its champions (he has met every world champion since Botvinnik). He is also a Member for Educational Chess of the International Chess Federation. He and the chess player Julio Ernesto Granda (Camaná, Arequipa), Peruvian International Grandmaster, Child World Champion and four times Panamerican Champion, will talk to Felipe Ortiz de Zevallos, founder of APOYO and a great fan of the game.

We talk to two eminent writers. Rocío Silva Santisteban, Peruvian writer, poet, academic and former member of parliament, is also a researcher and Executive Secretary of the National Department for Human Rights. She has written poems and short stories, published in books such as Me perturbas and Reina del manicomio. She now presents El Quemadero. Cuentos reunidos, a compilation of short stories. The writer and historian Iban Zaldua (Basque Country, Spain) present A escondidas, a revised and enriched version of stories originally published in Inon ez, inoiz ez (2014). This new collection, translated by the author from Basque into Spanish, mingles the fantastic and the real to explore human contradictions and subvert reality, deconstructing it and tackling themes such as humour, climate change and artificial intelligence. Historical archives are sources of an incalculable value for understanding the past, present and future of nations. Natalia Sobrevilla is a historian, researcher and lecturer in the History of Latin America at the University of Kent (United Kingdom), and is also the author of Independence and Nation Building in Latin America. In the context of the crisis affecting the National General Archive, we want to highlight the importance of protecting this legacy, which belongs to all citizens. In her contemporary classic, Papyrus: The Invention of Books in the Ancient World, Irene Vallejo explores the development of the book and libraries in the ancient world, and how they became effective ways for transmitting and preserving ideas, while also pointing out that “a dislike of books is a tradition with strong roots in our history”. In conversation with the Head of the Riva-Agüero Institute’s Historical Archive, Magally Alegre Henderson.
