Farid Kahhat makes a fascinating analysis of the right-wing in Latin America in a new book, Contra la amenaza fantasma: La derecha radical latinoamericana y la reinvención de un enemigo común. This sociologist, writer and journalist examines the narratives and actions of the Latin American right-wing movements, so complex, and varied and different from each other, just as left-wing movements are. The author goes beyond certain common factors (nativism, populism and authoritarianism) to an important phenomenon proposed by the radical right: the suppression or invisiblisation of the differences among left-wing ideologies, and the creation of a discourse that proposes the left as an existential threat to democracy.
