Born on 24 June 1947 in the Bistriţa-Năsăud region in northern Transylvania, the Romanian Dinu Flamand is a poet, essayist, journalist, translator and political commentator for the Romanian and international press. After studying Philology at the Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj, he worked for several newspapers, magazines and publishing houses in Bucharest. In the 1980s he was granted political asylum in Paris, from where he denounced Romania's oppressive regime in the French press (Libération, Le Monde) and on the radio (RFI, BBC, Europa Libre), working from 1989 to 2009 as a bilingual journalist at Radio France Internationale. After the fall of Communism in Romania, he returned to literature in Romanian, publishing volumes of poetry, translations and essays. In 2011 he was awarded the Mihai Eminescu National Prize for his body of poetic work. In the same year he was appointed advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister Counsellor of Romania in the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie. His books have been translated and published in many countries, including Spain, France, Italy, Mexico, Portugal, Germany, Chile, Colombia, Greece, Israel, Honduras, the Czech Republic, Moldova. Some of his most important titles published in Spanish have been: Apeiron, (1971), Estado de sitio (1983), Vida de prueba (1998), El frío intermediario (2006), Sombras y rompeolas (2010), La vigilia y el sueño (2016), Primavera en Praga (2022) and Hombre con un remo al hombro, Lucian Blaga National Prize. As a translator, he mainly works on Romance literature, translating from French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. In 2022, he published the first translation into Romanian of César Vallejo's complete poetic works. His most recent awards include the Romanian Academy Poetry Prize (2022) and the Nuevo Siglo de Oro Poetry Prize (Círculo de Poesía, Mexico City, 2023).
