Luis Llosa Urquidi (1951) began in the world of cinema as a critic and later, in the Dominican Republic, as an assistant to William Friedkin on the Hollywood film Sorcerer (1977). In Peru he began producing and directing the police series Gamboa and produced the young adult novel Carmín, founding his own production company, Iguana Films. Gamboa's success brought him to the attention of the American producer Roger Corman, who commissioned him to direct and produce for the North American market, including the 1987 Hour of the Assassin, which was the first film to surpass one million viewers when it was released in Peru. Established in the North American market, Llosa directed three films in Hollywood: Sniper (1993), with Tom Berenger; The Specialist (1994), with Sylvester Stallone and Sharon Stone; and Anaconda (1997), with Jennifer Lopez and John Voight, productions that opened in the United States to considerable box office success. Later, in search of a more personal cinema, he filmed La fiesta del Chivo (2003) about the Rafael Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic, based on the novel of the same name by Mario Vargas Llosa. This year he released Tatuajes en la Memoria, a drama that reflects on the years of terrorist violence in Peru through the autobiography of Lurgio Gavilán Sánchez. He has recently published an autobiographical book, Secretos de un latino en Hollywood.
