The Settlers,a Chilean film directed by Felipe Gálvez, opened at the 76th International Film Festival in Cannes and was the Chilean candidate for the Oscar nomination for Best International Film in 2024. Set in 1901, in Tierra del Fuego, it tells the story of three riders –a British lieutenant, an American mercenary and a mixed-race guide– who travel the territory with the mission of preparing a route for the trade in sheep. What follows is the raw, disturbing realty of colonisation: the absolute destruction of the native peoples.
