The tenth edition of the festival in Peru will take place from November 7th to 10th, featuring 96 events and over 100 local, national, and international participants. Starting with one of the stories from her book, Las voces de los árboles, the educator Elisa Guerrawill talk to teenagers about matters such as climate change, migration and resilience, culminating with an active exchange of ideas, based on the question What is the fire that affects you?Elisa Guerra (Mexico) has a Master’s in Education from Harvard University. In 2015 she was named Best Educator in the Latin American and Caribbean region by the Inter-American Development Bank, and was a member of the UNESCO Futures of Education’s International Commission.

Xabier Díaz de Cerio is a writer and journalist of Spanish origin, known for his work on matters related to ecology and sustainability, and for his dedication to documenting the environmental matters and challenges faced by Latin America. In his new book, Abecedario Climático Peruano, he presents over a hundred illustrated words, with stories and photos collected in the coastal, mountain and rainforest regions of Peru over the course of fifteen years. The work highlights the local "eco-heroes" who lead climate action, while also preserving ancestral knowledge, and it combines personal testimonies with an analysis of the effects of climate change on different communities. Patricia Salas (Peru) is a sociologist and expert in matters related to social development; she has a doctorate in Social Sciences from the Universidad Católica de Santa María and has been both Chair of the National Council of Education and Peruvian Minister of Education. Maritza Ramírez (Peru) is a dedicated Kukama activist who works to revitalise the language, as well as on the promotion of bilingual and intercultural education in Peru through documenting the Kukama language, developing educational materials and creating teaching spaces. Her work has been recognised nationally and internationally for its significant impact on the promotion of inclusive education that respects cultural diversity.
The cultural melting pot of traditional and modern knowledge, with all its experimentation, innovation and emergence, which we call “culture and education”, is experiencing a major paradigmatic mutation: the Internet. From this algorithmic network an old bias is arising once again as a planet-wide cognitive challenge: the “hydra of post-truth”. Nelson Vallejo-Gómez is a French-Colombian philosopher who specialises in the paradigm of complexity based on the magnum opus by Edgar Morin, Method. He has been Secretary General of the Association for Complex Thought (APC-France) and of the Scientific Council for National Education (CSEN-France). He is also the Chair of the Council of Honour in Social Science and the Humanities of the University of Caldas (Manizales, Colombia), Scientific Director of PREFALC-FMSH and Inspector General of Education and Research in France.

The Uruguayan writer Pablo Vierci is the author of a book telling a true story, one that is both unthinkable and extraordinary, which has inspired one of the most moving and striking films of 2023: Society of the Snow. In 1972, Flight 571 of the Uruguayan Air Force crashed in the Argentinean Andes en route from Montevideo to Santiago de Chile. On board were five crew-members and 40 passengers: a team of young rugby players who were going to attend a tournament with some friends and family. The book recreates the incredible story of the 16 young men who survived the snow at 4,000 metres above sea level, without any communication with the outside world, or food or shelter, facing the death of their loved ones. Vierci, who went to school with the survivors, started to write the book in 1973. He later went to the crash site with a group of survivors and their children. He published the book in 2009. In conversation with xx, he will talk about the story, which has been with him for over half a century, and the great work that came out of it. In conversation with Federico Rosado.

The Italian-Peruvian anthropologist and activist Stefano Varese is Emeritus Professor of the University of California in Davis, and founder of the Indigenous Research Center of the Americas. In 2017 he was awarded the Haydée Santamaría Medal, a prestigious recognition given by the Council of State of the Republic of Cuba. He has written, solo or with other authors, a number of books, including Proyectos étnicos y proyectos nacionales, El arte del recuerdo and the anthology Contemporary Voices from Anima Mundi (2020), about knowledge and spirituality in various communities around the world. On this occasion he presents El bosque civilizado: Ensayos amazónicos, an extensive work that shows his passion for and knowledge of the Amazon region. In conversation with Xabier Díaz de Cerio.
The Symphony Orchestra of the Universidad Nacional San Agustín, conducted by maestro Christophe Talmont (France), will offer a very original programme that centres on the Requiem, Op.48, by Gabriel Fauré, on the centenary of his death in 1924. This innovative concert has been prepared with the close involvement of Talmont and the conductor of the UNSA Symphony Orchestra, Pilar Lopera (Peru), and proposes the performance of works that represent a certain idea of the French approach to music, so well represented by Fauré, whose message is one of intimacy and interiority and which focusses on the purity of the musical idea. His Requiem is an example of this, from the very first chords, and, thanks to its consoling message, it has moved audiences and musicians ever since it was first played.

This event involves the screening of a 15-minute documentary, followed by a conversation between Alejandro Millán, producer of the documentary and BBC Mundo journalist, and Matías Zibell. The Tsimane are one of the 36 indigenous nations officially recognised by the plurinational state of Bolivia. Its 16,000 semi-nomadic members live in the Misión Fátima region, a remote corner of the Bolivian Amazon. Experts believe that it is their very isolation that contributes to the unique way in which this ethnicity ages, something that scientists have been studying for decades.

Two Peruvian writers talk to Enrique Planas about their latest books, in which nature and human emotions play major roles. The writer and social communicator María José Caro was included on the Hay Festival 2017 list of the 39 best Latin American fiction writers aged under 40. Her most recent work, Vida animal, tells the story of four friends on a hen night in Chosica, in which the author uses references to the animal world in order to guide us around the complexity of the human relationships. Susanne Noltenius, an outstanding Peruvian writer of German origin, is a graduate of the School of Creative Writing run by Alonso Cueto and Iván Thays, and has published successful works including Crisis respiratoria and Tres mujeres (2017 National Literature Prize in the Short Story category) and a number of books for children. Her latest book, Se hace otoño, tells the story of a woman who, under stress due to the political changes in her country and a difficult family history, seeks a new life in Germany, surrounded by nature and aiming to find emotional stability.

Poetry reading-workshop for women, taking the text by the poet Maggie Smith as a first inspiration to share and create poems together. It is not necessary to have written poetry before, but if participants have written any before, it is suggested they take some to the event. The workshop is moderated by the educator Elisa Guerra, shortlisted for the 2023 Loewe Poetry Prize. Her book Ellas, Afasia won the poetry prize awarded by the magazine Punto de Partida, published by UNAM (Mexico). Guerra runs Las Primeras Letras, a literary podcast-workshop for children.

In May this year he published his new book, Blue Ruin. Jonathan Castro (Peru) is a political and investigative journalist who works for the La Encerrona outlet. Karima Ziali is a Spanish writer and researcher of Moroccan origin. She has a degree in Philosophy, a Master’s in Anthropological Research and a doctorate in Migratory Studies. A hundred years after the birth of Jorge Eielson (Lima 1924- Milan 2006), five figures from the literary and cultural spheres will talk about this brilliant Peruvian poet and artist, who lived for much of his life in Italy. Martha Canfield, an Italian-Colombian poet and lecturer in Literature, is the Director of Florence University’s Jorge Eielson Studies Centre, where she teaches. Sharon Lerner is the Director of MALI and curated the first retrospective exhibition of Eielson’s work in Peru. The writer, literary critic and essayist Renato Sandoval, the writer Guillermo Niño de Guzmán, and the diplomat Hernando Torres-Fernández have all known the famous author and artist. Together, they will tell personal anecdotes and talk about his extensive body of work, bringing us the creative world of this extraordinary poet and visual artist.

He will talk about his book La democracia del click y del TikTok, which deals with the challenges of the social media for politics, highlighting both their capacity to democratise public voices as well as their potential for creating intolerance and polarisation, emphasising the need to reinvent democratic institutions in the digital era.
