(Montevideo, 1949) this poet, essayist and translator studied at the Caro y Cuervo Institute and received her doctorate from the Javeriana University in Bogota, where she also began her career as a teacher. She has lived in Italy since 1977 and is Professor of Hispano-American Language and Literature at the University of Florence. She has published, in Italian, Spanish-language authors such as Benedetti, Mutis, Eielson, Vargas Llosa, Cardenal, Eugenio Montejo, Idea Vilariño and Carmen Boullosa; and, in Spanish, Italian authors including Pasolini, Sanguineti, Bufalino and Magrelli. She has published studies on López Velarde, Quiroga, Borges, Cortázar, Aurelio Arturo, García Márquez, and Chicano poetry. She manages the Latin American collection of the Florentine publishing house Le Lettere and is a founding member and Head of the Centro Studi Jorge Eielson in Florence. She is the author of six poetry books in Spanish and five in Italian, the latest being Corazón abismo (2013) and Luna di giorno (2017). In addition to these collections, two anthologies of her poetic work have been published: Sonriendo en el camino, edited by Márgara Russotto (Montevideo, 2011) and Flamante geografía, edited by Coral García (Lima, 2012). She has received various awards, including the Translation Prize from the Cervantes Institutes of Italy for her versions of Mario Benedetti (2002), the Orient-Occident Arts Prize (Romania, 2006), and the Ramón López Velarde Ibero-American Prize (Mexico, 2015).
