In the ’60s, Madeleine abandons Paris to go to live in Prague with her husband; when the Russian tanks arrive in the city the couple splits. In the ’90s, Madeleine’s daughter Véra falls in love in London with a young man who does not love her back. Mother and daughter will defy the archetypes of 20th century women.
