Ida Vitale is a Uruguayan poet, translator, essayist, educator and literary critic. She has won numerous literary prizes, including the Miguel de Cervantes Spanish-Language Literature Prize (2018), the Fil Prize for Literature in Romance Languages (2018), the Federico García Lorca International Poetry Prize (2016), the Reina Sofía Ibero-American Poetry Prize (2015), the Alfonso Reyes Prize (2014) and the Octavio Paz Award (2009). She played an important role in the Uruguayan artistic movement known as the Generación del 45. In the 1970s, escaping from the dictatorship in her homeland, she went into exile in Mexico. Vitale spent many years in Austin (Texas) and currently lives in Montevideo. Recent works of hers include La voz de Ida Vitale (2016), Poesía reunida. 1949-2015 (2017) and Shakespeare Palace.
