His bestseller McMafia: A Journey Through the Global Criminal Underworld, in which he describes the globalization of organized crime, has been dramatized and is now a successful BBC series. He has also written books such as Nemesis: One Man and the Battle for Rio, the biography of Antônio Francisco Bonfim Lopes, alias Nem, who ran Rio de Janeiro’s largest favela for over five years. He will talk to Jacqueline Fowks about what in the BBC series McMafia caused such a stir, and about his career as a writer.
