(Puerto Rico, 1968) Puerto Rican jazz musician and saxophonist. Aged 12 he began to play the tenor sax and to take music lessons and study European classical styles. Later on he studied at Rutgers University where he met other great jazz musicians including Kenny Barron, Ted Dunbar and John Purcell. In 1990 he joined Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nation Orchestra, and after it split up he continued playing with Gillespie until his death in 1993. Since then he has worked with many other internationally-renowned artists and also set out on a solo career. In 2005 Sanchez won a Grammy for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album for his release Coral. He teaches at the Puerto Rico Conservatory of Music and has given classes at various universities and music schools around the world.
