Professor at the National University of Colombia, he completed his post-doctoral studies at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) in the United States, and his PhD in Mathematics at the University of Michigan.
His research focusses on problems in the fields of Commutative Algebra, Nonassociative Noncommutative Algebras, Algebraic Geometry and Differential Topology.
He has co-published three books: Neuróbicos (together with Antonio Vélez), Pensamiento creativo (together with Antonio and Ana Cristina Vélez) and Topologia y geometría diferenciales en el lenguaje de sheaves (with Carlos Cadavid).
He has hosted several TV and radio programs.
