Colombian journalist (Bogota, 1945), he founded the magazine Alternativa in 1974 together with Gabriel García Márquez. He wrote the Contraescape column in El Tiempo for 30 years. Winner of several national and international journalism awards, he was also President of the Inter-American Press Association (IAPA). Author of five books on drug trafficking, paramilitarism, guerrillas and political corruption in Colombia, he edited the newspaper El Tiempo for ten years, retiring in 2009. Member in 1983-84 of the Negotiation Commission with the EPL and the M-19 during the Belisario Betancur administration, as well as the negotiating team that signed the Peace Agreement with the FARC in 2012. Graduate of Philosophy and Letters from the Universidad de los Andes in Bogota (1967), he also studied Politics at the University of Munich (1969).
