John CARLIN

carlin-john (United Kingdom) British writer and journalist, son of a Scottish father and Spanish mother. His books and articles have focused on politics and sport. He studied English Literature and Language at Oxford University, but his writings have always been of the journalistic kind. Since he began working as a journalist in 1981 for the Buenos Aires Herald, he has been a correspondent in countries such as Mexico, El Salvador, South Africa and the United States, for the BBC, The Times and The Independent. His books include Heroica tierra cruel; White Angels; Knowing Mandela; Rafa, mi historia –co-written with Rafael Nadal–; La Tribu; and Chase your Shadow: the Trials of Oscar Pistorius. Based in Spain since 1998, he worked for El País until 2017 and has contributed to The Observer and The New York Times. He has won the Ortega y Gasset Journalism Award, the British Press Award, the Juan José Castillo Prize for Journalism, the National Arts and Science Award (in the Journalism category), and the Italian Bancarella Prize for Best Sports Book of the Year. In August 2008 he published the book Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game that Made a Nation, which tells the story of President Mandela’s actions during the 1995 Rugby World Cup, which took place in South Africa.
