Nélida PIÑON

Nélida Piñón was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1934 to Spanish parents and did a degree in Journalism in that city. She is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Literature, being the first woman chair, and of the Brazilian Academy of Philosophy. She has been guest lecturer at universities including Harvard, Columbia and Georgetown. Her works include Fundador (1969, Walmap Prize), O calor das coisas (1980), The Republic of Dreams (1989), Voices of the Desert (2004, Jabuti Literature Prize), Coração andarilho (2009) and O livro das horas (2013). Her work, which has been translated into more than twenty languages, has received numerous literary awards, including, as well as those mentioned, the Gabriela Mistral Prize in Chile, the Jorge Isaacs Prize in Colombia, the Rosalía de Castro Prize in Spain, the 1995 Juan Rulfo International Prize for Latin American and Caribbean Literature, the 2003 Menéndez Pelayo International Prize, the 2005 Prince of Asturias Award for Literature, the 2006 Women Together Award and the 2014 Ojo Crítico Prize. She has honorary doctorates from a range of universities and in 2012 became Ibero-American Cultural Ambassador. A camisa do marido is her latest book.
