Alberto FUGUET

(Santiago de Chile, 1964) A Chilean writer, journalist and film director who became known for his involvement with the group known as Nueva Narrativa Chilena. Although born in Santiago de Chile, he spent his childhood in California. He is one of the most prominent Latin American authors of his generation and one of the foremost figures of the McOndo movement, which sought to move on from Magic Realism. As a film enthusiast, Fuguet is a partner and promoter of Cinépata.com, a website for film fans that aims to seek alternatives outside the major film industry channels to create and produce low-budget Latin American films, as well as to offer distribution channels for reaching out to large audiences. His most recent published books include Juntos y solos (UDP, 2014); Cinépata (Alfaguara, 2012); Aeropuertos (Alfaguara, 2010); Todo no es suficiente (Alfaguara, 2015), a profound and revealing literary profile of one of the most controversial Uruguayan writers of all time: Gustavo Escanlar; and No Ficción (Random House Literature, 2015). Of his work as a film director, an outstanding example is Musica Campesina, Best National Feature Film at the 2011 Valdivia International Film Festival, and another is Invierno (2015), a film with an ensemble cast, focussing on the young writer Alejo Cortés, who is surrounded by friends and family, rivals, acquaintances... In this urban, connected Santiago of intellectuals and posers, of parties and loneliness, a group of lives is connected by a writer, a book that will change everything, affections that are neither solid nor clearly defined, and a winter that will freeze everything.
