Hugo Jamioy was born in Bëngbe Waman Tabanók (“our sacred place of origin”), Sibondoy Valley, in 1971. He belongs to the Kamuentsa Kabëng Kamëntsá Biyá people (“people from here with their own thought and language”) made up of about 7,000 Kabëng (“ourselves”). Their main activities are agriculture, crafts (weaving, wood carving, musical instruments) and they are practitioners of the traditional Kamsá medicine. He has published the poetry books Mi Fuego y Mi Humo, Mi Tierra y Mi Sol (1999), and recently No Somos Gente, 2001.
