A major figure in British social realism, he achieved international recognition with Hidden Agenda (1990). Winner on two occasions of the Palme d'Or at Cannes for The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006) and I, Daniel Blake (2016). His work has examined conflicts in Spain (Land and Freedom) and Nicaragua (Carla's Song).
