Antony Beevor and Miguel Poiares Maduro with João Mira-Gomes

Events and conflicts that transform cities: wars, revolutions, relocations

Sevilla 2023,

Cities have reinvented themselves dozens of times over the last millennia. War and political events and conflicts have contributed to these transformations.

Antony Beevor, Miguel Poiares Maduro and the Portuguese Ambassador João Mira Gomes will discuss current affairs and the changes brought about by conflicts, revolutions and wars.

Antony Beevor is a British historian, whose books have been translated into 33 languages and have sold more than 8 million copies. He has published many popular historical works on 20th century conflicts. He studied at Winchester College and the Royal Academy at Sandhurst. Following in the footsteps of one of the most famous historians of the Second World War, John Keegan, Beevor is the author of numerous groundbreaking works on the battles of the Second World War (Stalingrad, Berlin and Crete), as well as histories of the Spanish Civil War and the Russian Revolution. His most famous books are the bestsellers Stalingrad and Berlin 1945 - The Fall. They have been celebrated for their vibrant and precise style, and for their use of Soviet archives only recently opened to researchers.

Miguel Poiares Maduro is a renowned Portuguese academic and politician. He was Portugal's Minister of Regional Development from April 2013 to October 2015. Previously, he served as director of the School of Transnational Governance, and professor of law at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy. Poiares Maduro was also a visiting professor at Yale Law School in the United States of America. He is also chair of the Executive Board of the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO), an STG-led project on online disinformation funded by the European Commission.
