What happens when you bring together people who hold outstanding positions in their field, but when these fields are very different from each other? The result is a unique perspective and a new way of seeing the world. Our participants have collaborated to create a piece of original work that will explore the problems in socio-ecological systems in the regions of Boyacá and Cundinamarca, and their response to environmental transformations, including climate change, land use, social and political changes, and the role and value underlying the biodiversity of these ecosystems. Juan Cárdenas is a writer, creative writing teacher and activist who has worked extensively with Afro-Colombian and indigenous communities in order to track oral traditions. The lead scientists are Dr Millner, of Bristol University; Professor White, of York University; and France Gerard, a scientist from the UK’s Centre for Ecology and Hydrology. They will be represented by Dr Julieth Serrano an expert in biodiversity, forest resilience and ecosystem services in Colombia. Dr María Paula Escobar Tello is a cultural and environmental geographer and Lecturer in Farm Animal Science at the University of Bristol. In conversation with BBC journalist Alejandro Millán.
