Ernesto Picco, winner of the 2019 Michael Jacobs Grant, spent the year researching and writing Un pequeño país aparte, a travel book about the Falkland Islands. What is life on the islands like today? Who do the people look to, socially and politically? Who are its outstanding historical figures? What internal conflicts does it have? How were the islands before the war? What changes have they undergone? Picco answers these questions based on interviews and time spent on the islands, and a close study of local, Argentinean and British archives, in conversation with Jaime Abello Banfi, general director of Fundación Gabo, and Mónica González, winner of Premio Nacional de Chile 2019.
At the end of the event, the winner of the sixth Michael Jacobs Travel Writing Grant will be revealed. This grant is possible thanks to an alliance involving Hay Festival, the Fundación Gabo and the Michael Jacobs Foundation for Travel Writing
