Sarah Churchwell is the Professor of American Literature and Public Understanding of the Humanities at the University of London. Her latest book Behold, America: A History of America First and the American Dream (2019) covers two terms that are historically and symbolically loaded for the United States, Latin America and the rest of the world. The origins of the “American dream”, with its connotations of progress and equality in times of prosperity and optimism, and “America first”, coined by the Ku Klux Klan and now brought alive again by the American president, Donald Trump, constitute the narrative thread of this work. Sarah Churchwell is the recipient of an Eccles Writer’s Award.
