Saying that the past should not be forgotten has become a mantra, especially in contexts of political transition. However, if it is painful and counterproductive, should we still hold on to the past? In his latest book In Praise of Forgetting, the writer and journalist David Rieff questions the way in which peoples tend to relate to the past.
