Valentine is the 2017 Hay Festival International Fellow and a multi award-winning author of YA fiction. Her novels include Finding Violet Park and Fire Colour One. The Welsh novelist is attending all Hay Festivals for one year, working with young people to give a voice to their concerns and present a manifesto for adolescence. In this session, she explores ways in which teenagers might be better understood and empowered.

Go exploring in Louis Jensen’s universe centred on a boy living in a small town where something mysterious is happening. He is given a magical lucky bag from the woman who runs the town’s tuckshop. It contains a piece of liquorice in the shape of an arm. Other pieces look like a leg and a head. Would it be possible to put together these pieces in order to create a human being made of liquorice? Or perhaps a monster? During this workshop we shall examine the boy’s notes shall be use interactive pieces, Hopspots, in order to drive around town to make up our own mind about this bizarre story – and find an ending for it.
