Tavares’ work has received literary awards in several genres, among them the Prix du Meilleur Livre Étranger 2010, which has so far been given to authors like Robert Musil, Philip Roth, Gabriel García Márquez, and Elias Canetti, the Prix Littéraire Européen 2011. He received The Saramago Prize and received awards in nine other countries. He was twice finalist in the Médicis and Femina, in France. Saramago predicted the Nobel Prize for him.
