Valentina Oropeza Colmenares is Venezuelan and has been working in journalism for 20 years. She has worked as a reporter, investigative journalist, editor, columnist, foreign correspondent, presenter and documentary producer. She currently covers the United States and Latin America for global audiences with the BBC. She has coordinated investigations that have received more than a dozen awards, such as the King of Spain Award, the Roche Award and the award for journalistic excellence from the Inter-American Press Society. She founded the research units of the Prodavinci and Contrapunto sites in Venezuela. She has written for the newspapers El Nacional in Venezuela, Reforma in Mexico, El Universo in Ecuador and Süddeutsche Zeitung in Germany. She was a correspondent for Agence France-Presse in Caracas. She has been a grantee of the Pulitzer Center and a fellow of the World Press Institute at Saint Paul University, both in the United States. She studied journalism at the Andrés Bello Catholic University in Caracas. She did a Master's degree in International Relations at the Barcelona Institute of International Studies in Spain and a diploma in Journalism and Development at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication in New Delhi.
