Paul Martin, a top flight security expert, and author of The Rules of Security explained how security experts are continually involved in a complex game cat and mouse with terrorists.
He was joined on the stage by Anja Shortland author of Kidnap: Inside The Ransom Business in a discussion chaired by investigative journalist and Moneyland author Oliver Bullough.
Shortland described the counter-intuitive policy of arguing down the monetary value of kidnap victims, used by the negotiators, while dealing with the kidnappers. Martin explained how different terrorist methodologies go in and out of fashion including assassinating high profile targets and attacking critical infra-structure.
