The Paradoxal Compass: Drake’s Dilemma
The rows that may have occurred between Francis Drake and the Golden Hind's chaplain Francis Fletcher when the ship was stranded off Celebes, Indonesia, have been reimagined in Horatio Morpurgo's latest book.
The Paradoxal Compass: Drake’s Dilemma, is an absorbing narrative about the gaps in the historical records. In the book Morpurgo  questions the motives of several historical figures, deconstructs England’s relationship with the sea, and highlights the lessons we can learn to solve contemporary ecological problems.
Known for his intellectual rigour, he drew a parallel with the first wave of globalisation during the sixteenth century and current disagreements over climate change.
According to Morpurgo human conflicts surrounding the environment have been consistent throughout the centuries, be that between Drake and Francis Fletcher or  contemporary disagreements regarding climate change.
