Assert Your Rights to Save the Planet

The Good Energy event on Saturday 26 May, What They do With Your Money, made quite an impact, and many have requested a copy of the proposed letter that consumers could send to their pension company about climate change. The financial expert included this in his presentation and the aim is to ensure that the organisations investing millions on our behalf should be more transparent in their decisions and specifically in the election of company directors.

You could alter this wording or add to it as you wish, and then ask for an e-mailed response.

People really do have the power to influence Board decisions. Here is the template letter:

Dear [pension company manager],

You are responsible for investing my money. Thank you for undertaking that important job.

Climate change is a huge challenge for my, and everyone else's, future. The actions of big companies, particularly energy companies, make an important difference to climate change.

Can you assure me that when voting for directors of energy companies you will reject the appointment of anyone who has not committed to manage their company in a way that is compatible with the Paris Climate agreement?

I understand that many people are being elected who will not give that assurance, so I would want to be sure that you are only using the votes that my savings provide you with, to approve the appointment of those who respect their responsibility to protect the Earth.

Yours etc
