A walking relay from Cardiff Bay to Hay-on-Wye involving children from 12 Primary Schools was completed today at the Hay Festival site, part of a fundraising campaign for the charities Send My Friend to School and Cariad Cymru, which works to provide education, welfare and justice to neglected children in Kenya. These are among the organisations campaigning for quality education and learning opportunities for all, throughout the world, a goal set by the United Nations.
The last school in the epic marathon was Hay Primary School. Pupils walked from their new building in the village to join thousands of children arriving to enjoy the free programme for Primary Schools funded by the Welsh Government and Hay Festival Foundation.
Hay Festival commissioned authors and illustrators, including Eric Ngalle Charles, Lizzie Harper, Patrick Jones, Daniel Morden, Adele Nozedar and Nicola Davies, to walk and work with pupils along the way.
A petition of signatures collected along the way was presented to Chris Davies MP, and there are charity collections throughout the day.
