Quechua is pop

Arequipa 2023,
Jorge Alejandro Ccoyllurpuma was born in Cusco and his creative work has always been related to Andean culture and the Quechua language. He has worked to strengthen the native languages of Peru through the publication of poetry with translations into Quechua. His work is compiled for the first time in the volume Paraíso tropical andino. L E N I N is the artistic name of Lenin Tamayo Pinares, well-known as the creator of Q-pop, a fusion between the world famous Korean K-pop and Quechua- and Spanish-language Andean music. In 2021, when he published the music video Cuando estoy aquí, recorded in the historical centre of Lima, his style went viral on TikTok, achieving 2.5 million views. As well as mixing Peruvian sounds with the pop, rap, R&B and rock styles present in K-pop, his dance routines contain steps from traditional dances such as La Diablada. In conversation with the Arequipan filmmaker, graphic artist and cultural manager, Edward de Ybarra.
