The main programme will be available to watch via Crowdcast, which is the platform we are using for our live video events during Hay Festival Digital. The Crowdcast platform will enable you to watch, chat, send questions and participate in polls. You will need to register on Crowdcast in order to watch the main programme. You do not need to create an account on the Hay Festival website in order to take part in the festival, however by creating an account with us we can keep you informed of any last minute changes to the programme and other up to date festival news.
Once you register you will have instant access to the event page, including the polls, chat, and Q&A. To return to the event page at any time you simply click the link in your confirmation or reminder email, the event will start automatically at the time advertised, and all you have to do is sit back and relax.
If you do not receive a registration email it may be worth checking your Spam folder, or there could be a mistake in your email address.
Please be aware that at peak times the 10 minute reminder email from Crowdcast may be delayed. Please do not wait for your reminder before heading to the event page.
There is one link for your event which you can access either on the event listing on the Hay Festival website (this is the register button - if you have registered for the event clicking on this button will take you direct to the event) or in your confirmation and reminder emails.
You can also look at the events you have joined by going to https://www.crowdcast.io/joined-events
You can also find a list of the events you have booked by visiting the Crowdcast website and hovering over the icon in the top left hand corner of the screen, where you will find "My events" on a menu.
All our events are streamed in HD so require a good internet connection. If you’re having streaming issues you can try a few things.
Crowdcast works in the browser on Android devices and there is an ios Crowdcast app for Apple devices.
Although our events run through an internet browser it may enhance your experience if you plug your computer into a larger television screen with an HDMI cable or wirelessly with a suitable device.
Please note - If you do not receive a registration email, it may be worth checking your spam folder, or it may be that there was a typo in your email address. Please also be aware that at peak times, the ten minute reminder email from Crowdcast, may be delayed. Please do not wait for your reminder before heading to the event page. There is just one link for your event, it is at the bottom of the event listing on the Hay Festival website (register button), and in your confirmation and reminder emails. You can also find a list of the events you have booked by visiting the Crowdcast website and hovering over the icon in the top left hand corner of the screen, where you will find "My events" on a menu.
Crowdcast allows you to use one login for all of your events. In your profile you can access all of your upcoming events. You can personalise your profile with a picture and brief bio.
Polls are located in a tab just below the video feed. Your host may add a poll prior to the event or during a live session, so be sure to check this area periodically.
Questions & Answers are also in a tab just below the video feed. This is where you can submit any questions or leave a comment on a question. Once the host has answered the question, you will be able to view it in the answered tab. You can also upvote questions that others have submitted.
Chat is located on the righthand side of the video feed. This is a great place to say hello and introduce yourself before the event goes live. Chat lets you directly communicate with the host and other attendees before, during, and after an event.
For the deaf and hard of hearing we are subtitling some of our live events, please see the programme for full details and wherever you see the TEXT logo, you will be able to register for this event with captions. This may also be a useful option if English is not your first language.
You will be able to access the subtitles using the following link:
https://www.streamtext.net/player?event=HayFestival which will be live just before each event.
We suggest that you get the Streamtext website open and ready slightly prior to the start of the event so that when the event begins, you can be sure it is ready in the way you feel will be best for you.
We recommend setting the Streamtext page to display as yellow text on a black background. This is very simple and can be done using the header bar at the top. This also ensures that any users with additional requirements can change the subtitle display to suit your own needs. Once you have the font colour, background colour etc. set to meet your personal preference, you can hide the header and the chat bar at the side by clicking the two buttons in the bottom right of the screen (Show/Hide Header and Show/Hide Chat).
We recommend moving this window to the very bottom or very top of the screen and sizing it to display 2 or 3 lines of text at once and then displaying the event broadcast above or below it.
For blind or visually impaired people we can send you the programme in microsoft word format, which can be enlarged, and is more easily read by text to speech software. We are also happy to make bookings on your behalf, simply email email@example.com if you require further help.
All our events take place BST as advertised. However, if you are accessing from a different time zone, it will still be possible to replay, for free, up to 24 hours after the event. Following this the event will be made available on Hay Player (artist consent pending), an archive of over 8000 Hay Festival events, for a modest annual subscription fee.**
