Humberto VÉLEZ

velez-humberto Humberto Vélez (Panama, 1965) studied Law and Politics at the University of Panama, and then Cinematography at the renowned International School of Film, Television and Video of San Antonio de los Baños in Cuba. In 2011 he founded Visiting Minds, a forum that seeks to promote art, education and the sustainable development of communities with the participation and collaboration of national and international public and private institutions. He is internationally known for his collaborative performances, in which he has worked with a wide and unusual range of groups, communities and individuals. He has been invited to numerous international biennials, including Venice, Shanghai, Havana, Cuenca, Montevideo, Liverpool, Ireland, Guatemala, Central America and Panama. In 2013, the Art Gallery of York University in Toronto published Aesthetics of Collaboration, a book dedicated to his artistic work with communities, with texts by Luis Camnitzer, Hans-Michael Herzog, Emelie Chhangur and Adrienne Samos, among others. In 2018 he received a medal awarded by the French Senate in Paris for his work in the arts. He currently runs, together with MAC Panama, the new International Performance Festival of Panama (PEPA) together with the curators Adrienne Samos (Panama) and Juan Canela (Spain).
